The Minima Innovation Challenge Launch

Powered by EdenBase

On Tuesday 12th July we were proud to have launched the Minima Innovation Challenge powered by EdenBase. The challenge aims to support and encourage individuals and teams to create innovative prototypes or solutions on the world's first truly decentralised blockchain, Minima.

We were delighted to host a brilliant evening at Huckletree Shoreditch, which involved an introduction to Minima and EdenBase, a fireside chat on ‘The Importance of Decentralisation and Innovation', and the opportunity to network with our audience of press, investors and partners.

‘If you speak to anyone who is successful it is usually because a connection or introduction was made which sparked that success. That’s what EdenBase does.” (Eric Van der Kleij, 2022)

Agenda

6:30 - Arrivals & Networking

7:00 - Minima Innovation Challenge Introduction

7:30 - Fireside Chat: The Importance of Decentralisation and Innovation

8:00 - Networking over Drinks & Snacks

The Launch

The event started with a welcome and an introduction from Marta Piekarska-Geater, leading Open Source and Ecosystem at EdenBase, before handing over to Co-Founder of Minima Hugo Feiler and Co-Founder of EdenBase Eric van der Kleij who discussed the opportunities that this challenge could unlock.

The Speakers

Eric Van der Kleij: Eric is a Co-Founder of EdenBase, UK’s first fund with a supergrowth hub and an ecosystem, investing in the next generation of game changing companies, powered by frontier technologies.

Hugo Feiler: Hugo is an entrepreneur with over two decades of experience in the marketing communication space.  He is Co-Founder and CEO of Minima, the world’s first truly decentralised blockchain protocol based entirely on mobile phones.

Marta Piekarska-Geater: An expert in Open Source and Ecosystem Leadership, Marta has an impressive track record of leading communities in many organizations including Balancer Labs, The Linux Foundation, Hyperledger, the Sovrin Foundation, and consulting for numerous startups.

The Fireside Chat

The founders then engaged in a fireside chat on decentralisation and innovation, which delved deeper into the motivation and incentives behind the challenge. They discussed what opportunities and challenges a truly decentralised blockchain may hold.

Key take-aways:

  • Accessibility: Contestants should think about how to make their prototype financially or socially viable and accessible to people. The aim is to create applications based on the decentralised protocol which can be established in today’s society in a way that is beneficial to all.

  • Fees: Hugo explained how chains with fees incline themselves to centralisation because they require a middle man to mediate the financial transaction. Minima is a powerful protocol precisely because it removes the necessity for this middle man, allowing people to run a node with such ease that they do not need to be paid to do so. ‘Not valuing decentralisation is like being uninsured. Most of the time it’s fine, until it is not’, as Hugo Feiler observed, quoting the founder of Nexus Mutual Hugh Karp.

  • Potential implementation: Hugo then spoke about the challenges of blockchain in the automotive industry. Nodes could be devices on the roadside. Devices can talk to each other, and that can result in an information overload. However a full, lightweight Minima node on each vehicle means that if one part breaks, the rest of the parts are still functioning. A centralised network is only as powerful as its most central feature. Decentralisation might also have a huge part to play in helping centralised organisations like healthcare become more resilient run more smoothly. Minima encourages creativity and engagement with current industry needs.

  • How does the MIC differ from a Hackathon? This challenge encourages really in-depth thinking with expert guidance over the course of the 8 weeks. We want to find solutions that can be built to last, and that requires time and feedback. The judges will provide feedback and assess whether the products can live up to the aims they set out to achieve.

We were fascinated by Minima. It is not often that you get a project that actually lives up to its claims and expectations. In the case of Minima, creating a blockchain which is truly decentralised and truly provides users with privacy.’ (Marta Piekarska-Geater, 2022.)
